# 23 Web 2.0 Journey

Wow, I have finished all the exercises, can’t believe it! 
My experience about the programme Web 2.0 through 23 things was very interesting. I know there was a time where I was so frustrated that I decided to discontinue the programme. But with the inspiration from my colleges I started again.
I have explored and discovered so many new things which I would have never known. I enjoyed the Generators, Flickr, Zoho writer, Youtube. I will go back and use them at some stage.

Big Thanks to the Web team for their hard work patience.

# 22 Social networking

As I said in Exercise #21,This type of social networking is targeting only certain group of people.
Auckland City Library and Rotorua Library have adapted to sending out information to certain sections of society. Good to be with the fast growing technology.
I had a looked at couple of the American Libraries sites. Some are really attractive and impressive videos and links.

# 21 Bebo, MySpace and FaceBook

I have looked at these three sites. But I do not want to join any one of it. Amongst three I liked the Facebook the most. Most of the kid are familiar with bebo and facebook. I always think, how freely people add their personal details on web. It worries me a lot. I know that you can lock you profile but still….. I also looked the Rotorua Public Library’s Bebo page, very interesting.
One artical published in one of the UK's news paper "How Facebook, Bebo & Myspace can ruin your life"

#20 e-books

Well, I don’t think this was actually hard to find. I remember downloading e-book in past. I explored Google book search and looked some of the random subjects and found some very interesting books. The other feature on Google book search is that you can download book in different languages, which is great.

However, reading on computer is not my choice. I would not prefer to read whole book on the screen, browsing is ok.

#19 Podcast

I know ipod but never used Podcast before.
A podcast is a feed used to distribute serial audio or video content, such as a weekly music show or video program. Like blogs, podcasts have many different formats and topics, from talk shows to cooking etc.........

I had a look some. I think I need lot of time to have a look each and every directory. I like the Yahoo audio search. Its simple and clear.

# 18 YouTube

I have used YouTube in past I know its fun and I can spend hours on it. Some of the video clips are really informative and really useful. I so some Library and Librarian related video clips.

However, I can see the benefits of YouTube for public libraries. A guided tour pointing out where our collections are housed. Some events (Author talk) held in the libray can be on YouTube.

I like this video clip.... have a look

#17 Web 2.0 awards list

After looking so many sites I have decided to explore Maps
Goolge Maps was awarded first in searching maps. The web's leading mapping application, Google maps is more than just lines on the screen. With Street View, Aerial View, advanced directions and integration with Local Search, Google Maps leads the mapping field.
Live search Maps awarded second - Live Maps, by Microsoft, include directions and other regular mapping functions, but its really neat feature is "bird's eye view," where you can see a cityscape or terrain as though you were on an airplane, flying above.
Google Earth awarded Third - Fly around the world with Google's amazing maps and information mash up. View pictures, attractions and local venues, and keep up to date with the ever-improving technology of Google Earth.

I tried using all these three maps. I like the Google earth the most, it shows 3d images. I can spend hours on this web site.

I am actually not at all impressed with Rollyo. Looks more complicated to me.

# Exercise 12 SandBox

In the beginning I found bit difficult, but tried clicking on different links and got the reuslt finally. Its easy to use and easy to understand.

# Exercise 11 - Wikis

Well, often I use Wikipedia. specially for student who come to do their home work.
Wikipedia is a free internet encyclopedia that is maintained by general users. Like an encyclopedia there are an umlimited number of subjects or topics. Terms and items in the description are cross referenced to other wikipedia entries, making it extremely easy to complete research.
Since the entry and maintenance of subject material can be edited by any Internet visitor, the information should not be considered to be complete or the final answer, but is often accurate and useful for quick information.

#10 Web 2.0, Library 2.0

There are some interesting articls on the web. I like the artical by Tom Storey on 'Where will the next generation Web take libraries?' Technology is changing every minute. and as it is mentioned in the artical - In Web 2.0, the Web becomes the center of a new digital lifestyle that changes our culture and touches every aspect of our lives. The Web moves from simply being sites and search engines to a shared network space that drives work, research, education, entertainment and social activities—essentially everything people do. You and your mobile and nonmobile devices—PDA, MP3, laptop, cell phone, camera, PC, TV, etc.—are always online, connected to one another and to the Web. This is one side

However, we should also consider that not all patron want to use these tools, many prefere to visit the library and find out information from Librarians.

# 9 Technorati

Technorati seems too much for me. No explanation about Technorati on home page.
I looked into various things like Videos, new movies - and I came across couple of links that you can actually download movies. It was interesting to have a look at how many people are looking and commenting on all these links!

#8 Tagging and discover Del.icio.us

Absolutely brilliant!!!! The good thing about social bookmarking and tagging is that you can manage your hundreds of useful sites on web very easily. It is really great that with social bookmarking you can share your knowledge with rest of the world. you can tag the site which is more important to you.

At work you can share lots of information and resource by socila bookmaking.

Things #7: RSS & A Newsreader

Well, it took little while to understand RSS and Newsreader. I started to read about RSS but so..... much to read. I can't read long long pargraphs on computer, rather I prefer short and simple steps.

Anyway, I am having look at some of the feeds and I have also subscribed some interesting topics. Now I have pleny to read online.

This technology would be great service for library patrons who are intrested in different topics including book reviews and current news.

#6 Technology tools

Well Technology is Human innovation in action that involves the generation of knowledge and processes to develop systems that solve problems and extend human capabilities.

In day to day life technology walks with us with or without our consciousness.
* Cell phone: the most effective communication tool. Any where in the world you go and you can be in touch with your family.
*Computer: A functional unit that can perform substantial computations, including numerous arithmetic operations and logic operations without human.
*Digital camera: I just love it. Such a handy tool which takes lots and lots photographs and delete if you are not happy with result, you can send them to your friends through email or put them on CD.
many more technology tools and applications we use in day to day life without realisation.

#3 Trying to learn more about blogs

Due to busy schedule, very difficult to spare some time for myself.
But I want to know more about this web 2.0.
I know that I am far behind of everybody but I will try to finish all my exercises sooner.

I have done first blog. all about interesting facts. It was fun finding these facts. The most exciting thing about this was choosing template and choosing all different colours. I have tried using maximum colours.

Looking forward to learn more about this programme.
